" Matters of Political Inconvenience: Scientists in the Public Service" is an interview with Jeff Ruch, Executive Director of Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, by Simona Perry. It is an original article for the online news aggregator, Truthout, and is dated May 7, 2008.
Comment on this interview by Ira Chaleff: Ruch raises the not-often-heard point that his group encourages individuals to not become whistleblowers, which act puts them on the outside of the process, but instead has them examine the option of remaining inside the system as a moral change agent. This is one of the options I also consider in the chapter "The Courage to Take Moral Action" in my book, The Courageous Follower. I find the interview to be a good discussion of the narrow, though sometimes necessary band, in which whistleblowing is effective, of the inadvertent ways in which dedicated scientists become whistleblowers, and of available strategies to minimize the personal and professional risks while improving the chances of being effective in getting accurate data into the public domain.
